5 Ways To Make Sure You Stick To Your New Year’s Resolutions

1

Lose Weight

Just like we make sure that we eat, shower, and sleep each day a part of our habitual routine (obviously), make it a point of considering exercise a part of your daily survival as well. Set aside at least 20-30 minutes a day to focus on you and your body. If you don’t have a gym membership, that’s okay! For example, as a single mother I CAN’T get to the gym, so I dedicate the hour after my son goes to bed for me and I use workout DVD’s, the stairs, and I find HIIT routines on Pinterest (jumping jacks, wallsits, etc.). I have pinned some examples that I refer to here.

Getting Organized

After Christmas especially, you will find that your house begins to gain a lot of “clutter”. De-clutter your life by going through your closets and donate old clothes that you do not wear (I usually go by the “I haven’t worn it in 2 years” rule) to shelters in your area, or charitable stores in your area. If you have children, invest in toy bins. This is especially helpful for the Lego hoarder in your life. As for organizing the clutter in your home (kitchen, office, etc.), I found “1000+ ideas about Getting Organized” extremely helpful.

Spend Less, Save More

When it comes to saving you generally need to go by the “3 month” rule. Whatever you spend in a month (mortgage, bills, groceries, gas, EVERYTHING), the rule of thumb is to have that amount saved x 3. This covers any emergency expenses that may arise, whether it be something to do with your car, a sudden illness that leaves you off work for a bit, house repairs, etc. But how can you save that kind of cash? Most likely, it won’t be right away, but you can set up savings bonds, or even have a little extra taken out of your account everytime you make a debit purchase into a separate account. What you don’t see, you won’t be tempted to spend.

Spend More Time with Family

There are some simple ways that you can be sure to include more family time as part of your New Year’s resolutions. For example:

  • Implement a “no cell phone” rule until after your child(ren) goes to bed
  • Volunteer either at their school, or at a sports function that they are involved in
  • If you are physically active, include them in a fitness routine, running outdoors, or play a sport with them
  • Have a family gaming night/movie night
  • Include them in meal preparations
  • Read them a book before bed
  • Plan a vacation with your spouse and/or kids
  • With your spouse, set aside one day a week for a “date night”
