What Is This Heat Dome in Ontario?

If you live in and around Niagara Falls, you are well aware of how hot it has been the past few days. There is a heat dome in Ontario. A “Heat dome” is a barrier that forms when there’s high pressure in the upper atmosphere. It stays in place trapping the hot air from escaping. The air is then forced to compress down causing serious heatwaves!
The difference between a normal heatwave and the heat dome in Ontario is that normally we get relief at night with cooler temperatures and a bit of a breeze, but with the heat dome there will not be many places that will drop below the 20c mark. The air is hot and stale, and meteorologists predict that this weather will stay put well into the end of July.
2013 was the last time that we had six days in a row past the 30c mark.
